When music is upbeat it can be used to motivate and inspire, perhaps whilst jogging or during physical exercise. Slower, calmer music can be used for relaxation and meditation…. reducing the heart rate and stress levels.
Music links to memories through strong recalls in the brain. Do you remember your earliest nursery rhymes, first dance, perhaps an old song that can instantly transport you back in time?
Have you ever thought about the social side of music?
Music helps us to bond and creates connections. You feel connected to the people around you at a concert or gig, as you are immersed into another world. Being with people who share the same love or enthusiasm of a particular band or type of music, creates strong social bonds – helping people feel part of a community, increasing our social networks and helping us feel less alone. Gaining a better sense of belonging and understanding who you are, also increases confidence.
It is astounding how one persons’ music can create a simultaneous reaction in thousands of people. These experiences make you come alive. You gain something that is yours to keep forever. A musical polaroid … a snapshot of time.
So where can you share these experiences? Going to the O2 is certainly not for everyone…
Sofar Sounds – songs from a room
The idea is to have gigs in peoples’ living rooms and public intimate spaces, such as coffee shops or galleries, with an unknown roster of musicians and artists who play to live audience of 30-50 people.
Intimate gigs all around the world. Bringing the magic back to live music.
Rocky Start and Rafe Offer founded Sofar in 2010 – disenchanted with music at big gigs and people not enjoying music for what it was. So they put on their own gig in their living room … now Sofar Sounds is live in 300 cities across the globe. In the past 12months they have put on 3400 gigs, showcasing 9000 artists, bring a diversity of music from different countries. Some are well known such as Bastille, but many will be bands “on the up” that you have not heard of yet.
Why not attend a Sofar Sounds event near you?
The mystery element of who will play is all part of the excitement. People apply on line to whatever area you are in and get put on a waiting list. If you are lucky enough to be picked and invited, you can take a friend and pay a small donation on line. The audience bring their own cushions, drink and nibbles and settle down to enjoy the performances. Money from ticket sales go towards the artists, they may prefer a promotional video from the event or a fee to help with travel expenses.
If you are up for adventure and have a reasonable size room, you may want to consider hosting an event for a unique experience. It’s an intense crossroads in the lives of hosts, artists, audience and the volunteers who make it all happen.
You may be an artist who is interested in playing on the Sofar Sounds circuit? It’s an amazing network for the artists themselves who do not know whom they will be playing alongside. Some even end up collaborating and touring together.
